DCB & BI Library, University of Kerala chooses L2C2 Technologies’ Koha hosting service

DCB & BI Library, University of Kerala goes online with Koha Integrated Library System.

We are pleased to welcome the Department of Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, University of Kerala as our newest client-partner from “God’s own country” aka Kerala – the southern most state of India. Earlier the library was running Koha 3.22 on an in-house (on campus) server. With this move, they are now fully hosted on the cloud and are running on the latest major stable version of Koha i.e. on 16.11.x series.

About DCB & BI

The Centre for Bioinformatics, established in 2005 and upgraded as the Department of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics in 2011, is a new generation inter-disciplinary as well as multidisciplinary teaching & research Department of University of Kerala, India. The centre offers a two-year innovative MSc (Computational Biology) programme and also 2 one-year MPhil programmes in (i) Bioinformatics (ii) Computer Aided Drug Design. The Department has researchers with vivid backgrounds (Electrical Engineers, Mathematicians, Physicists, Biotechnologists, Botanists, Bio-chemists, Computer scientists are some of them). The Department has its own premises with state of the art informatics laboratory and also a molecular biology and bio-electronics laboratory which provide a balanced training to multidisciplinary talents that the centre attracts. The Department library having a stock of over 2425 specialized books.

The Director is Dr. Achuthsankar S. Nair, who has lead the department since its inception and presently has 6 lecturers, an Emeritus Professor (Dr. Oommen V. Oommen), one Post Doctoral Fellow, half a dozen Project Fellows, 19 full-time research scholars and at any time, 30-40 masters students. The Department also has 2 adjunct Professors, in addition to visiting faculty and Erudite visitors [Prof. Dr. Johann Deisenhofer (Nobel Laureate – 1988) visited the Department on Dec 1-3, 2010, Prof. Martin Chalfie (Nobel Laureate-2008) visited on Jan 5-7, 2011, followed by Prof. Anders Liljas (Nobel Prize Committee Member) on Jan 20-26, 2011.

The Department is situated in the beautiful and green Kariavattom Campus made greener by the department’s “Trees for 2100 AD” initiative.

About the college

Established in 1948, it is the oldest and largest college in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. Affiliated to the University of Calcutta, the college is named after Sri Fakir Chand Halder, the father of founder Sri Jagadish Chandra Haldar, a local businessman. It offers undergraduate courses in liberal arts, science and commerce, a teacher training course as well as a few post-graduate programs. The college is located at Diamond Harbours in the southern suburbs of Kolkata, on the eastern banks of the Hooghly River quite near where the river meets the Bay of Bengal. [1][2][3]

About Gouri Devi Institute of Medical Science and Hospital

Gouri Devi Institute of Medical Sciences & Hospital, Durgapur is a Medical College with ultra-modern 300-bed hospital setup by Rahul Foundation under the visionary stewardship of Mr. R. N. Majumdar. GIMSH welcomes new admission of 150 M.B.B.S. students in the academic session of 2016-17. The medical school comprises of 21 departments with experienced faculty members with extensive facilities that include well equipped classrooms, laboratories, an air conditioned library etc. The hospital is having all the clinical departments like General Medicine, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology (Eye), Otorhinolaryngology (ENT), Obstetrics & Gynecology (OBG), Dermatology, Pulmonology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Dental etc. including a full-fledged emergency & trauma care center. The library is located on the 2nd floor of the college building with 1827 sq. m. of floor area that consists of the Stack room, Journal section, air-conditioned Students reading room, Staff reading room, Internet MEDLARS room, Audio-visual unit, Reprography room, Circulation counter, rooms for the Librarian and other staff, Daftaries and Book binders, Skill lab etc.

About Sammilani Mahavidyalaya

Established in 1996, Sammilani Mahavidyalaya is located in Baghajatin on Eastern Metropolitan Bypass, Kolkata. Initially the college started functioning from a local secondary school, Santoshpur Vidyamandir (Boys) and the classes were held in the evening. Within a record period of only seven months it’s new building was constructed and the college shifted to its present address. From a humble beginning with just 3 students, the college today caters to the educational need of nearly 2000 students spread across its Humanities, Science and Commerce departments. It is affiliated with the University of Calcutta.

We are happy to announce that Krishna Kanta Handique Central Library, West Goalpara College in the north eastern state of Assam have choosen to implement Koha ILS on our cloud service. They are currently hosted on the latest stable, packaged version of Koha i.e. 16.05.04. The local support will be provided by M/s Aditi Library Services – a known name among libraries in the North East.

About West Goalpara College

Setup in 1981, the college is located at Balarbhita, in the Goalpara district of Assam. Affiliated with Gauhati University, Guwahati, Assam, in the last 35 years, the college has served the higher education needs of over 70,000 students. The college’s central library is named after Padma Bhusan Sri Krishnakanta Handique (also spelt as Handiqui), a great scholar and educationist who also served as the founder Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University. The library was established in 1987 and was inaugurated by Shri Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, then Chief Minister of Assam. The library has a collection of over 20,000 books covering various subjects as well as collections of journals, magazines and newspapers. Aside from the central library, the individual departments have their own departmental libraries for reference service. It is supported by Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region, Government of India.

About Rishi Bankim Chandra College for Women

Named after Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay – the father of the Bengali novel and the author of India’s national song “Vande Mataram”, the college is located at East Kanthalpara in modern day Naihati, the birth place of Bankim Chandra. Functioning as an undergraduate degree college affiliated to West Bengal State University (Barasat), the college has a long history. It began in 1947, the year of Indian Independence, as Rishi Bankim Chandra College. In 1964 a morning section for female students was added, which in 1984 was re-christened as “Rishi Bankim Chandra College for Women”.
